Frequently Asked Questions
“Playing up” is the practice of a child playing in a division with children a year or more older than themselves. While we have allowed this practice in the past, we believe that allowing this ends up hurting the development of the children already playing in the correct division. Therefore, a child can only play up when he or she reaches Mustang 9, which is when coaches select players in a draft. Parents can request that their child play in a division of older players, but it is the Board of Directors, with input from the League Reps and previous managers, who will determine whether a child will be allowed to do "play up." “Playing down” in a division of younger players will also require the approval of the Board.
Birthday and grade in school generally determine the proper division for a player. However, we understand that for children with a birthday on or around the cut-off dates you may want to deviate from that standard. For instance, a child born in July might be in a grade in school with children born after September 1st rather than children born in May, as would be expected. Parents need to choose the division in which their child would have the most fun. Note, however, that travel baseball leagues and tournaments use the birth date as the only criteria for eligibility, and usually May 1st is the absolute cut-off date. Please refer to the Age/Grade Division Matrix to choose the right Division for your child.
