Buddy Ball (7 to 18 Year Olds)
In the Buddy Ball program, children who have such disabilities as autism, Down syndrome and learning disorders are paired with able-bodied buddies to play the great game of baseball. Buddy Ball is co-ed and open to all ages, with the current teams made up of players ages 7 to 18. Nearly 40 boys and girls play for the Cubs and the White Sox.
- Everyone gets to bat, and only two innings are played. All children hit the ball, either after it is pitched to them or with the help of a tee. No strikes are called.
- All players circle the bases and cross home plate, even if some have to be reminded where and when to run.
- The coach serves as pitcher, sometimes getting down on his knees to deliver an underhanded throw low enough for the smallest youngsters to hit.
- And no one keeps score, although some of the more competitive players insist on recording the results.
Colt / Palomino (15 through 18+ Year Olds)
Colt/Palomino baseball is an inter-community program that operates under the aegis of the Northern Lights baseball program. The season starts the second weekend in June and ends the first weekend in August. Games are scheduled on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays and do not generally interfere with high school summer programs. Colt teams are comprised of 15, 16 and 17 year-olds. Palomino teams are restricted to youngsters 18 years and over. Player age is determined as of the first day of June. Registration is on a first-come basis and placement on a team is likely but not guaranteed. Every effort will be made to place all registrants to the extent that roster size and the number of teams permit. Given the spirited rivalry among the neighboring communities, Northern Lights games are highly competitive.
